COMMUNITY

Our gender and social commitment to artisanal miners

Naples Metals has a well-established track record of supporting women artisanal miners to establish socially and environmentally appropriate mining practices.

While Colombia is a signatory of the Minamata Convention, which aims to protect humans and the environment from mercury contamination, controls are difficult to establish to safeguard small-scale, artisanal miners whose safety is often at risk. Women artisanal and small-scale miners face additional challenges, including economic and social gender-based violence.

Since 2022 Naples has contributed to the creation and development of Mujeres Mineras Unidas Por Colombia (MMUC). With presence in seven territories, the MMUC provides awareness of economic gender-based violence in mining territories and engages in developing locally-led environmental remediation efforts.

In addition, in partnership with MMUC, Naples supports the launching of small, women-run gold mining businesses.

90%

Of the real gold prize

In 2019, Naples Prime was invited by the Antioquia Mines Secretariat to be part of a formalization process to artisanal miners of the Embera-Katío Indigenous Community in Murrí, Antioquia, contributing to the opening of the purchase and collection of gold in the place. Currently, formalized miners sell their gold at 90% of the real gold price in the market instead of the 40% they received previously. Naples Prime, Italpreziosi and the Government of Antioquia delivered 50 stainless steel gutters to the community to increase productivity and avoid the use of mercury.
